Truth for Today

This book is not primarily about the “science versus the Bible” debate but about the more important matter of what the Bible, the Word of God, teaches about creation; and the need for 21st-century Christians to stand for this teaching in an increasingly materialistic and secular world, marked by aggressive and hostile atheism. As the uniquely reliable source of truth about all matters of the Christian faith, it should be no surprise that the Bible clearly addresses the issues relating to the origins of the universe, the world and life itself. It states that by faith Christians understand that the universe was created by the word of God. So what must I believe about creation? This apologia for the biblical view attempts to answer that crucial question.

Of all the prayers found in Scripture, The Son’s Prayer to the Fatherin John chapter 17 is unique; and it has a very special relevance to Christians, even in the twenty-first century! It was the conclusion of the “Upper Room Discourse” (John 13:31 to 16:33). Jesus explained to the apostles that He was going away from them. They were to be left behind in the world, whilst He returned to the Father. News that troubled them. His promise of another Comforter, the Holy Spirit, and His instructions about how they were to live in these new circumstances, had reassured them. Then, in chapter 17, the Lord showed that He did really care by praying specifically for them (and us). Therefore, this unique prayer is often called “The High-priestly Prayer of Intercession.”

We are inclined to talk to God or to discuss what He has said. Sometimes we have already decided what we will do. David appeals to God to “make” him hear. God wants to calm our hearts and spirits each day and cause us to hear His “loving-kindness in the morning” so that we can walk with Him throughout the day.’ The aim of Breadcakes for Breakfast is to help to stimulate this important aspect of the Christian life.

Angels were present to announce Jesus resurrection. And we see them doing something interesting. They sat down. In the simple acts of sitting down on the stone that was rolled away, and in the place where Jesus had been laid in the tomb, angels give us vivid reminders of the finished work of Christ and the glory of His resurrection.

The simple objective of When Angels Sat Down is to encourage us to sit at the Saviour’s feet in wonder, to reflect on His glory and His redeeming grace and love.

I used to get up very early to write the daily posts which form this book. Every morning I was joined by a friend. On one of the highest branches of the large tree at the bottom of my garden, a blackbird would sit and sing his heart out. It was a joy to listen to this happy bird, and I missed him when he finally moved on.

I hope this book puts a song in your hearts as you join me, reflecting on the love, grace and mercy of God and the many, many blessings we discover in Jesus Christ.
